Independent reading. tolbg is an informational publication about roads in Bulgaria for cars, motorcycles and freight vehicles. It does not sell vignettes, tolls, permits, insurance or roadside help, and it is not a public authority. Rules, fees and closures change. Confirm them with the responsible institutions before you travel.

Charges · revised 28 September 2026

One network, two ways to pay. Neither of them is this website.

Published . Updated . Prices below were published by the National Toll Administration for 2026. They can be changed by decree. Confirm them before you pay anyone.

tolbg does not sell, renew or check vignettes.

The checker and the payment pages belong to the toll administration at bgtoll.bg. A site that asks for a card in exchange for a “Bulgarian vignette” is not this publication.

Light vehicles, 2026 published prices

For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, trailers and caravans, and M1 camping vehicles regardless of weight, as described in the administration’s February 2026 notice. Euros are the displayed currency after 1 January 2026; the same notice also showed the leva equivalents at the fixed conversion rate.

A purchase can be given a start date up to 30 days ahead. An unused future vignette is a common reason a driver thinks the system has lost the payment.

What the vignette is tied to

There is no sticker. The record stores the registration number, the country of registration, the vehicle category and the validity. A digit missed in the plate, or the wrong country, produces a record that does not match the car at the camera. The driver still believes they paid. The camera believes they did not.

Check the status on the toll administration’s site by entering the plate and the country. The public description of the checker returns active, expired, or unused when a future start date has been chosen. Do that check before the border, not in the lane.

Who is outside the vignette

Vehicles with fewer than four wheels are described in public guidance as exempt. That covers a typical motorcycle or tricycle. Read the motorcycle page before you treat a sidecar or a trike as automatically exempt.

Goods vehicles and buses whose technically permissible maximum mass is over 3.5 tonnes left the vignette system on 1 March 2020. They pay a distance toll. A vignette purchased by habit does not replace the toll. The freight guide explains units and route passes. M1 motorhomes are the exception called out in the 2026 notice: they remain vignette vehicles even when they weigh more than 3.5 tonnes.

Where it is required

The vignette is for the paid national road network: motorways and the national roads included in the charging scheme. It is not a tax on every municipal street inside a town. The difficulty is that a driver leaving a hotel for the motorway joins that network quickly, and some through-roads in towns are national roads in disguise. If the trip uses Trakia, Hemus, Struma, Maritsa, Europe, or a first-class road between them, assume the vignette is required and then confirm on the paid-network map rather than the other way around.

A trailer is a second plate

The same 2026 notice lists trailers and caravans alongside light vehicles. A car with a valid vignette can still be towing a trailer that needs its own. Run the checker twice.

Before you pay anyone

  1. Read the registration certificate. Note the mass and the category.
  2. If the mass is over 3.5 tonnes and the vehicle is not an M1 motorhome, stop looking at vignettes and look at the toll.
  3. Choose the validity that covers the days you will actually drive, including the return if it falls outside a weekend product.
  4. Enter the plate as registered, and the correct country.
  5. Save the confirmation, then check the plate on the official checker.

Enforcement uses cameras and roadside checks. The amount of a compensatory fee is set in law and has been redenominated with the euro. This page deliberately does not quote a fine, because a stale fine is worse than none. The administration’s own notice is the place to read the current figure.
